On March 26, I got an email from Tim with just the words “SAVE THE DATE – Saturday, April 12” with no other explanations. When asked about it, he’d give me no answers.

“Fine”, I said, “but can our Facebook readers ask questions?”

He said, “Sure, as long as they are fairly general and yes or no questions.”

So that evening, I posted the following on Facebook.

“Okay, folks, how good are you at “20 Questions”? You know the game where someone is thinking of something, and you try to figure it out, and you can only ask “yes” or “no” questions.

Well, I just received an email from my incredible hubby, Tim, with this photo (SAVE THE DATE) and the text read…

“Saturday, April 12th. That is all. For now….”

So, I get to ask 20 questions. If you could ask him a question for me, what would it be? Remember… only “yes” or “no” questions!

If you want to see the questions, and some were quite amusing, make your way back to April 26 on Wee Folk Art’s Facebook Page.

Here is a sampling of some of the questions:
Q: Do I need luggage? A: No
Q: Do I need to dress formally? A: No
Q: Can I bring my knitting? A: No
Q: Will there be gnomes? A: No
Q: Will I remember this day 5, 10 or 20 years from now. A: Yes

And so the questions continued. By the end of the evening, I was no closer to guessing. As it turned out, we had to reschedule, so the suspense continued. Finally, this past Saturday, we went on our mystery outing. Only someone who knows me well, will understand what Tim gave me was more meaningful and more enjoyable than a romantic weekend at a B & B.

Tim took me to a woodworking shop, and a master craftsman taught us how to use a lathe!

Okay, okay, I’m sure many of you are probably thinking… “Are you serious? THAT’S what he made such a big fuss about?” And the answer is YES! And I was every bit as thrilled as he knew I would be. I have always been fascinated by lathes. True story! To see someone take a block of solid wood, and shape it into something completely different has ALWAYS fascinated me. When I accompany Tim to woodworking shows, he always has to pull me away from the lathe demonstrations! It’s flippin’ awesome!

So, below, are photos to show my day. I can’t believe how quickly 5 1/2 hours flew by. Okay, I was a tad bit overdressed. As a matter of fact, the first time I took chisel to wood, I had to stop, because all of the wood shavings shot directly into my bra. Not a problem that is usually encountered in the workshop! But Tim was even prepared for that. He had brought me a change of clothes, but I was able to tie on an apron and that worked just fine.

But in the end, I had a bowl. I MADE A BOWL!!! It is the most beautiful bowl I have ever seen! I love everything about it. I lovingly applied finish to the bowl after I got it home, buffing it between coats, and applying enough finish to give the bowl a beautiful patina.

Of course, now I want my own lathe. Tim and I are in negotiations as we speak 🙂 But, even if I don’t get a lathe, even if I never make another bowl, I did get to make one. I can’t imagine a more wonderful way to spend a day, or a more wonderful husband.

Thanks, Othy… I will remember this day 20 years from now… it was magical!

The bowl was made from ambrosia maple.

BTW… Tim made a bowl, too. He isn’t done finishing his yet, but I will share photos of his bowl when it is completed!
