This year for Candlemas, I REALLY wanted to make some snow candles. But, alas, it is raining, there’s never been more than 3 inches of snow on the ground at a time, and for the first time in my lifetime, there isn’t a snowbank as far as the eye can see. So, I needed to change plans. Instead of making candles this year, we made candle holders. And because I hadn’t totally given up the snow theme, we made super easy, but lovely, votive holders rolled in Kosher salt. It has a snowy look, but is warm at the same time. We had some simple glass votive holders left over from a different project, but you could make your own Candlemas Kosher Salt Candle Holders with any glass or jar.
Candlemas Kosher Salt Candle Holders Materials:
- Mod Podge, Sealer or crafting glue
- Kosher salt
- glass jar
Cover the jar with a thick layer of your choice of adhesive. I used a sealer on one and Mod Podge on another.
Sprinkle some salt on a flat surface, and roll the jar through the salt so all areas are covered in salt. You could add some glitter to the salt it you’d like.
When the jar is completed dried, coat with a sealer.
Put in a candle. The glass is opaque and gives off a lovely light.
What a great idea! The candle holder glows with such a wonderful warm light. Did you end up using the Mod Podge? I had a project idea but wondered if it would stand up to a bit of heat. Does it get soft when the glass gets warm?
It’s supposed to be around 70 degrees this afternoon here. It’s supposed to be winter here. lol. So I can totally relate to the no-snow blues. Winter here has been more like spring. I cringe thinking about what the weather is going to do this summer.
I used Mod Podge and a sealer on the holder. So far, I haven't had a problem with it overheating or making the glass sticky. I've also done the same thing with tissue paper and that worked well, too. I do use tea lights. I'm not sure if the heat is different between tea lights and votive sized candles, but mine have been fine.

I do an outdoor candle set-up at Christmas with votives and tea lights, ordinary jars and votive candles.

The photo was taken when it was dark. The flame caused a lovely yellow glow. In the light of day, the candle holder does look white… but in dim light… it's magic 🙂 It gives off a yellow glow. It really is lovely.

Just started some of these today. Nice quick easy project for a 4 yo. I added colour to some of mine by shaking salt with a drop of food coloring in a container. Going to finish tomorrow.
I never thought of adding food coloring to the salt. How cool. Let us know how they turn out 🙂
