One of things Michelle and I want to include on our site is a data base of various applique patterns. Sometimes they will be designs we are using for a specific project, and sometimes they will just be an applique we designed just for fun! Hopefully, over time, this will become a resource where people can come to get applique patterns or ideas. Whenever we feature an applique, we will include the pdf. Enlarge or reduce the pattern to fit your needs. This week’s pattern is a simple 5 petal flower with 2 leaves. It features a blanket stitch and stem stitch. LOL I would NEVER show my handiwork that up close. How in the world do you get your stitches so perfect? It seems that no matter what I do my work always looks so messy. Any hints or secrets?
Thanks! Much of my neatness comes from being a tad bit obsessive…or anal…when it comes to my crafting. But mostly it comes from decades of practice! Over time you just get a feel for it. But, I’m willing to take out a few stitches if they start running a muck! A couple of hints…if I’m needle working a straight edge with a blanket stitch, I’ll often use a quilt seam guide and a chalk pencil to mark a line. Now I know to stitch to this line. And with a little rubbing, the chalk line comes off. The chalk comes in both light and medium colors so it will mark on most fabrics. When I’m doing something like a vine freehand, I’ll make light marks on the fabric and embroider over it. BTW…if you’ve never used one, I’m a fan of a quilt seam guide. They were actually make for quilters…thus the name…to help mark 1/4" seam allowances used for piecing quilts. But I use it all the time in embroidery, too. Hope that helps. But mostly it is just practice. BTW I think crafts look perfectly lovely without being perfect. It’s the charm of homemade, right?
I love this site and would like to make this felt flower applique into a barrette for my granddaughters although I printed it out and am having trouble reducing the size. Can you help me? Thank you.
Basically, if you first print out the pattern in the pdf format we have here, then put it back in your printer. Most printers have a reduction setting if it can scan. It just depends on how small you want to make it. I would probably start around 50%. If your printer can’t do that, let me know how big you actually want the flower part… without the leaves, and I’ll reduce it for you 🙂
I have tried everything on my printer to reduce the size of the flower but can’t. I would so much appreciate it if you can make it about 40% or 50% of the original. I think that would be ok for a barrette. Thank you so much for your help.

The image that you have printed is 100% in size. Use a photocopier and the reduce function. Use sizing less than 100% eg 50%; 75% and you will have asmaller image.
