Whether you live in an apartment, condo, or house, the place we call “home” is often an alias for “family”. Our home is where we gather with our family at the end of the day. Our home is where we keep the things that are most important to us. And our home is where our life long values are instilled. When we think of going “home”, especially when we talk about “going home for the holidays”, it really isn’t a building we are talking about, but rather a sense of belonging, love and happiness that can be found in a loving family.
This week we have been talking about the importance of the family in our lives. When reading Christmas in the Big Woods, it is apparent that Laura’s Christmas was filled with happiness, excitement and family. As parents we all have tales of how we spent our Christmases. Some stories may even be sad, but I’m willing to bet most of your stories were about things done with family. We created a Log Cabin Applique Block that resembles a house Laura might have lived in. It was designed to fit a 6″ x 6″ block but can be enlarged or reduced to meet your needs. The block can be found with our FREE Appliques, or the 2 page pattern can be found here:

I love this applique! Thank you so much for this whole advent adventure. I was wondering what everyone is doing with their finished blocks?
Over 2 years ago when I made my first block, I thought I’d turn them into a wall hanging or lap quilt. I have yet to do anything with mine, using them as examples when I work with other people. I haven’t heard of anyone actually using the blocks in their 6" x 6" size to make something BUT people are sharing projects all the time that they have made using our blocks. Here are a few ideas people have shared:
pendant banners – triangles strung together with different appliques
appliques on clothing – they’ve been on t-shirts, coats and skirts
quiet books – books made for babies with different appliques
barrettes – miniaturized designs
bookmarks
wall hangings
banners
I too am curious to see if anyone has actually put something together with the blocks and whether they made them out of felt or cotton.
My friends and I are making a quilt for a friend’s daughter that is getting married. We are all making 3 blocks, with a design we like, made up in 3 different color combos and all of houses. Guess what? I have my design! It should be a beautiful quilt. All random colors and patterns. We are starting after the holidays. Thanks.

Hi,
I really love the appliques blocks and I’m planning to make them( I was always embroidering, but my walls are full now). Now I wonder what to do with them when I’m finished…I can’t hang them on the wall, I don’t have little children or babies around, but maybe I can make a pillow or a blanket. Do you have any idea if this is possible? I will use the woolen fabric on the photo’s( I don’t know the word in Enlish for that fabric, in Holland we call it ‘ vilt’.
