I few weeks ago I stumbled upon this awesome crocheted pattern for Tooterphants Amigurumi Pattern and shared it on Facebook. I instantly fell in love with these whimsical little creatures and decided to make a couple for the Little Lady. Sometime in the next month her baby brother will be born, and he’ll receive many gifts. I wanted to make sure she had something special that I made just for her.

Well, who’d have thunk it, but it seems I can crochet! After making LL a cat last year, I have found more and more patterns that I liked that were crocheted, and now I have the confidence to tackle them. I have to admit I work with my computer on so I can look up various stitches, but I’ve so enjoyed crocheting that I’ll no longer limit myself to just knitting.

If you’d like to make your own Tooterphants (they come in 2 sizes) you can download the PDF file from Lucy Raven Scar’s Etsy Shop. The pattern is $4.00 and very well done. I must admit it took me longer to make it than I anticipated. The stitches are very small and tight, but I feel certain it will hold up to years of play.

The pattern called for safety eyes, but since little ones will be playing with this, I wanted sewn on felt eyes instead of the plastic safety eyes. For each eye I drew 2 circles on a piece of medium brown felt.

Then, in the middle circle, using 6 strands of black floss, I added the iris using a Woven Spider Wheel Stitch. You can find the stitch in our Stitch Glossary.)

I cut out the eyes

then sewed them onto the tooterphant using 1 strand of brown floss and an overcast stitch.

I then added the mouth.

For the rest of the totterphant, I simply followed directions. I can’t wait to make more!

I used the yarn suggested in the pattern. It is King Cole Splash Double Knitting Yarn from Silsden, U.K. It is 100% acrylic and 100 g.

I think the Little Lady is going to love her new playmate!
