Flamingo Applique Block

I love serendipitous occurrences. Case in point… Monday night I got an email from one of our readers. It said:

“I’ve been a fan for sometime. Thank you for the beautiful work. I get so much inspiration from your site. I’d love to see a Flamingo Applique. Any chance???

Angela”

Sitting next to my keyboard was an applique block I had just finished and planned to share today. Of all things, it was a flamingo. What are the chances? I guess better than an infinite amount of monkeys with an infinite amount of typewriters and an infinite amount of time actually typing the complete works of Shakespeare. (Hmmm… that may be too much of an esoteric family reference 🙂

Anyway, I had considered telling Angela, “I’ll get right on it.” then impress her with my swift response, however, I wanted to be able to share this happy coincidence! So, even though I had already designed the flamingo, this applique is dedicated to you, Angela. Hope you like it!

As always, this applique was designed to fit on a 6″ x 6″ block but it can be enlarged or reduced to meet your need.

Make a copy of the pattern.

Cut out felt using the pattern as a guide. Transfer any embroidery markings.

Using a running stitch, sew beak to block using 2 strands floss.

Using a running stitch, sew beak tip to beak using 2 strands floss.

Using a running stitch, sew flamingo to block using 2 strands floss.

Using a blanket stitch, sew wing to flamingo using 3 strands floss.

Using a stem stitch, add wing detail using 6 strands floss.

Using a stem stitch, add waves using 6 strands floss.

Using a French knot, add eye using 6 strands floss.
