Today we are sharing our Reindeer Applique Pattern, the second in our North Pole Pals series. I happen to think he is just a cutie, and I’d be pleased as punch, or perhaps eggnog, to call him a pal! The Reindeer Applique Pattern is appliqued to a 6 inch square but can be enlarged or reduced to meet your needs. These appliques can easily be turned into ornaments by simply adding a backing and a string to hang them on the tree. The Elf ornament shared at the end of the post was made by my DIL, Meghan, and she did not stuff hers. You can do the same thing with our reindeer. I will share a couple of suggestions at the end of the post about making a reindeer ornament. Enjoy!

DIRECTIONS FOR THE NORTH POLE PALS REINDEER APPLIQUE PATTERN
Refer to pattern and photo for applique placements, cutting instructions and embroidery stitches.
Make a copy of the pattern.
Cut out felt using the photo and pattern. Transfer any embroidery markings.
The Reindeer Applique Pattern is layered. On the pattern pieces, dotted lined are used to show overlap lines. Applique the pieces to another piece of felt or simply to one another in the following sequence:
- 1 head
- 1 muzzle
- 2 eyes
- 2 irises
- 1 nose
- 2 ears
- 2 antlers
- 1 collar
- 3 bells
Add detail to the Reindeer Applique Pattern as follows:
- Unless otherwise stated, use a small running stitch using 2 strands of embroidery floss in colors that match the felt.
- use 3 strands of floss and a stem stitch to add mouth.
- use 6 strands of floss and a straight stitch to make the Xs inside the bells.
- use 3 strands of floss and French knots at the ends of the 3Xs inside the bells.
Note: Although the Elf is shared here, there reindeer is made in a similar manner. To make an ornament, sew together and embroider the reindeer as described above. Place the finished reindeer on top of another piece of felt. Using 2 strands of floss and a running stitch, sew the elf to the felt changing floss as necessary so the floss matches the front of the elf. When you are at the top, loop 6 strands of floss long enough to hang from a branch. Knot the end and sew that in between the front and back of the elf. When you are done, using sharp, pointy scissors, cut away the backing close to the reindeer edges, being careful not to cut the loop. Note: When making the reindeer, add 2 pieces of pipe cleaner to the antlers to help them stay up. To do this, cut each pipe cleaner so it reaches near the top of the antler and extends about an inch into the reindeer’s face. Sandwich these between your embroidered reindeer and the backing. When you sew the front to the back, sew over the piper cleaners at the top of the head, which will secure the pipe cleaners in place.
