BOX OF CRAYONS by Kimara Wise

If I could name the crayons
Oh what fun it’d be,
The names would be extraordinary,
Just like you and me!

Red would be “Ketchup”
Orange “Marmalade”
Brown would be “Squishy Mud”
And, Purple, “Monster Shade”.

Yellow would be “Dandelion”
Green “Dragon Scales”
Blue would be “Berry Ooze”
And, Black, “Skunk Tails”.

If I could name the crayons
Oh what fun it’d be,
The names would be extraordinary,
Just like you and me!

As a child I remember being fascinated by the color names in my box of crayons. Everyone once in a while Grandma Pearl would bring me a box of 64 crayons… which included a built in sharpener… and one of the first things I did was to remove all the crayons from the box and read their names. (For fun, check out this Wikipedia list of Crayola Crayons color names.) I often thought it would be fun to get to name crayons. Aside: I also reorganized my crayons by color, but that speaks more to my obsessive-compulsive tendencies than anything creative 😉

Today, besides the Crayon Coloring Page, I’ve shared a poem, Box of Crayons. I channeled the 8 year old boy in me and pondered how he might name the crayons
.
For a fun activity, have your children (or the child in you) color the crayons, then name them. I was limited by the rhyming nature of a poem, but I’m looking forward to coloring a page with the grandbabies then naming my “box of 8 crayons”. Enjoy!
