When I was a child, my first exposure to the world of dinosaurs was from the movie Journey to the Center of the Earth. Disney would showed the movie in 10 minute segments on The Mickey Mouse Club. I wouldn’t actually read the book by Jules Vern until I was an adult, but as a young child I remember being absolutely petrified of the dimetrodons from the movie. To this day velicoraptors and t-rexes can’t hold a candle to those low run dinos with lots of teeth and that spiky fin on its back. So, of course, when doing a collection of dinosaurs, I HAD to include a mighty dimetrodon applique!

This dimetrodon applique is the third in our Dinosaur Applique Collection. Perhaps the dimetrodon isn’t the first dinosaur you think of, but to me, it will always be king! As always, I made the dinosaur to fit on a 6″ x 6″ block but it can be enlarge of reduced to meet your needs.

Directions for your Dimetrodon Applique

Make a copy of the pattern which can be found HERE.

Cut out felt using the photo and pattern. Transfer any embroidery markings.

Position the felt pieces on your block. The dimetrodon’s fin should be under the body. Follow the overlap line on the fin pattern. Pin, baste or staple the pieces in place.

Using a running stitch and 2 strands of floss, sew the body to the block. Make sure the fin is under the body.

Using a running stitch and 2 strands of floss fin to the body.

Using a running stitch and 1 strand of floss, sew the eye to the head.

Using a French knot and 6 strands of floss, add a knot to the center of the eye.

Using a stem stitch and 6 strands of floss, add the mouth.

Using a stem stitch and 6 strands of floss, add the spike lines on the fin.
