I threw together a tutorial on How To Cut Out Felt. That may sound a little silly, but the difference between a quality felt piece is as much about neat cutting as it is neat stitching. Fair warning… this was not on my plate for today, so I did rush through this a bit. Let me know if you encounter any problems. Also, I seldom look at other people’s techniques… it’s the explorer in me that wants to make my own discoveries! There may be many other techniques out there that work as well or perhaps better. This is just the way I do it. Hope it proves helpful. The directions for How To Cut Out Felt can be found HERE or with our FREE Patterns.
🙁 I keep getting a “requested not found” message. ?
me too :-/
Should be all better 🙂 Thanks for letting me know.
Thanks for a great tip! The tape will definately help! x
I don’t know how you do everything you do. You guys take such good care of us. I learn so much and have been able to do things for my family I couldn’t have without your help. You are giving and selfless and fun. Love you guys, you rock my world.
hello, i just wanted to let you know that the how to cut felt link and the kitty cat doorstop links in free open patterns, are linked and you cannot get into the kitty cat doorstop (which is what i was trying to do).
thanks,
ani
Thanks for the head’s up. It should be fixed now. BTW… we have a search button found in the lower left corner… it can be useful when little glitches like that occur.
Michelle,
i have already downloaded it and printed it. i was just looking for fabric measurements.
thanks!

Hi,
This is such a helpful tutorial. I have been a silent admirer of your blog, and have always wondered how you cut the felt so neatly.
Thanks for this tutorial – and for all the awesome free patterns you provide. I’m slowly getting into felting and this is a huge help – thank you!
What a great tute, I love these tips. I’ll be linking.
I recently started sewing with felt. I was getting so frustrated because no matter what I did my finished pieces just didn’t look good. I just found your blog yesterday. Today I went out and bought some Fiskar Scissors and packing tape. I followed your direction and Yipee Skipee! Finally, I am satisfied! Thank you so much. This is the best tip I have ever been given. And it’s so simple to use. I love your blog. It’s obvious you spend a lot of time. You must be a very loving person. Thanks again. I am sooo pleased.
Hi Kimara
Thanks for this great tutorial.
Just wondering though. Do you use a new pattern every time you cut out a new piece?
B/c when I put the tape over it and cut the piece out, I then realized I needed to trace and cut a new pattern piece with quarter inch around the edge.
This seems time consuming to keep cutting new patterns.
So just wondering do you use a new pattern piece each time or do you reuse the ones that have tape on them?
Thanks so much in advance for your time,
Laya
Hi Laya,
I reuse the patterns that I have taped on until they start getting too thick. Then, sometimes I trace around my pattern piece. Because it has a few pieces of tape on it, it becomes thick like a template. I trace on the back side of the felt and use disappearing ink that you can remove by blotting with a damp cloth. For some small pieces, however, I opt to make additional copies of a pattern and use a fresh pattern for each. It also depends on how accurate I need to be. The more accurate, the more apt I am to use a new copy of the pattern. Hope this helps.
