Harvest Time 12 Week Curriculum
(Preschool-Kindergarten / Ages 4-6)

I developed this Harvest Time curriculum when my oldest was in kindergarten and my middler in preschool (originally published Aug 2008 Nature's Way Learning). It is the first term of a 3 term year schedule that focuses on the rhythm of the seasons with a special emphasis on holidays and nature. To complete the year you will also need to download (coming soon) Winter Wonderland (term two) and Bees, Butterflies and Buds (term three). This program was designed as a gentle way to introduce my children to the world around us. We read, baked, and crafted together. We did great big messy art and made a long lasting Harvest Quilt that is often fought over when we snuggle on the couch. It was a wonderful year that we all enjoyed thoroughly. I’m now dusting it off in preparation of using it again with my youngest and wanted to share it with our readers. I thought some of you might enjoy learning along with us this fall. I am also working on updating the other two terms and will have those curriculum guides posted later this summer.

I want to thank you so much for this. My youngest just started kindergarten (half day) and I am still wondering about homeschooling. This program you have put together is a wonderful way to see what homeschooling would be like, even if I am just doing it loosely. Thank you for providing this curriculum for free. One of the things holding me back has been paying for a curriculum and then for some reason discovering that it would not work for us. This way I can test the waters without breaking our budget. I truly appreciate your hard work.

Art Curriculum
Just curious how you use the art portion of your curriculum? Do you study the picture and talk about it, use it to inspire an art creation? I'm just a little uncertain how to get my four year old son interested in looking at art and learning about it!
I use the Come Look with Me
I use the Come Look with Me Books for Art Appreciation. The kids look at the pictures while I read the short text about the image. Then we use the discussion questions in the book to talk about the art in more detail. Sometimes we will do a project based on the image but since we do so many other arts and crafts I'm mainly using the books to spur constructive discussion about the images.
If you are looking for a more in depth Art Program I highly recommend Artistic Pursuits. I have used their preschool and level one books mixed in with our other curriculums. Book one includes art from ancient times and the middle ages which has worked in well with our classical history program.

Field Trip Journal Pages

I just wanted to say thank you for this curriculum. We started school this week and you really put together a perfect mix that is perfect for us. I was nervous about homeschooling but this really opened my eyes as to what types of things he (as a 5yr old) could do. Like the quilt squares, he is always asking me if he could help me when I do my crafts (sewing, knitting, etc..) and never thought hey you make a quilt square and we can make a quilt together.

Opps... forgot that I had
Opps... forgot that I had left that in there (I took it out of the Winter Unit). I started making a supply list but threw in the towel because I couldn't decide what to include and what to assume everyone already had... especially since there is so much 'in the kitchen' stuff. I may address it in the future but do not plan to have it ready before the fall at this point. I'm busy trying to get the other units user friendly. You will need to leaf through the projects and making your own weekly shopping list.
If an industrious reader would like to go through and type up a weekly shopping list for the Harvest Unit and email it to me I would gladly up loaded and share it with the rest of our readers.

Great ideas for nurturing children at such a young age

I have always felt drawn to homeschooling, my husband has always been strongly opposed. I was happy with the school we enrolled our daughter to start kindergarten in, then I found your curriculum. Its so pretty, and so inspiring! I felt in my heart that having my girl home is the best option, and sending her to a school is just felt wrong. In a turn of events I couldn't have seen coming my husband (totally out of the blue) says he wants to try homeschooling... and here we are!

For me, I found that the hardest part about homeschooling was making the descion to do so. It was a rollercoaster of emotions in my eldest's preschool years... But once we embraced it, we've never looked back. It is just the most natural fit for our family. I'm glad we were able to offer some inspiration. Good luck in your journey!

This is lovely! The term is laid out so nicely - very basic and to the point (and with 4 children, to-the-point is exactly what I need!). I I love that you have a variety of activities that can reach the gamut of interests, and it's not overwhelming at all - just enough! These are things that my 9 year old would enjoy doing alongside her 6,4 1 year old siblings!
