Better gardeners than I can get hardy hibiscus flowers to grow in Michigan. I have yet to have one successfully winter. Since I adore them, I tend to think of them as annuals and always have one of two plants in the garden. Perhaps I shouldn’t bother but few plants are as showy and beautiful as the hibiscus, and to me, it just wouldn’t feel like summer without their cheery faces smiling up at me! It only makes sense that I would include this beautiful flower in a summer applique collection.
As always The Hibiscus Applique was designed to fit on a 6″ x 6″ block but can be enlarged or reduced to meet your need. Enjoy!

DIRECTIONS – Refer to pattern and photo for applique placements and cutting instructions.
Make a copy of the pattern.
Cut out felt using pattern. Transfer any embroidery markings. Note: when cutting out random flowers, do not cut perfect circles. The flowers are meant to be slightly askew. Refer to photo.
Using a blanket stitch, sew out petal to block using 3 strands floss.
Using a running stitch, sew inner petal to outer petal using 2 strands floss.
Using a running stitch, sew pistil to block using 2 strands floss.
Using French knots, stitch pollen using 6 strands floss.
Using a stem stitch, stitch vines using 6 strands floss.
Using French knots, add tiny flowers using 6 strands floss.
