Germany is known the world over for their delicious bake goods. One of the most popular treats is the strudel. The oldest recorded strudel recipe, a turnip strudel, was found in a 1696 recipe book. Strudels are a many layered paper thin pastry that is rolled around a sweet filling, usually with fruit and nuts. Even the best bakers find the pastry challenging. Fortunately, there are other desserts that are delicious but much easier to make like our German Apple Cake Recipe. This cake has a quick bread density and is full of delicious apples and cinnamon.

Add 1/2 cup vegetable oil to the melted butter.
Mix oil and sugar together. Beat until well blended. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix thoroughly.
In a separate bowl, whisk dry ingredients together.
Add dry ingredients in the bowl a little at a time, blending well between each addition. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl to make sure all ingredients have been mixed into the batter.
Peel, core and dice apples.
Add to the batter and mix. The batter will be thick.
Pour batter into a greased and floured 9 x 13 inch baking pan. Level and pat down the batter.
If you would like to add a sugar-cinnamon topping, mix 3 tables of sugar with 1 tablespoon of cinnamon.
Sprinkle the topping over the batter making sure to cover the edges.
Bake in a preheated 350 degrees F oven for 45 minutes or until the cake tests done in the center. Allow the cake to cool before serving. If you did not add a sugar-cinnamon topping, after the cake has cooled, you can sprinkle the cake with powdered sugar. (optional)
