Dymkovo toys (also known as Vyatka or Kirov toys, which were named for the village where they originated) are clay figures of animals or people. Originally, they were crafted as pennywhistles and were believed to have magical qualities. As time went on, they were no longer perceived as possessing magical qualities, and became toys for children. Although many cultures have created clay toys, Dymkovo toys are easily recognizable because of the style of painting. Traditionally, the figures have a white background, and are painted with bright colors using geometric shapes, mainly circles. Today, they are a popular souvenir for people visiting Russia. Our tutorial uses air drying clay and can be painted to look like authentic Dymkovo toys.

Shape clay into figure and allow to dry completely. We suggest using simple figures with broad surfaces. It makes the figures easier to paint. Our simple pig worked well.
If your clay is not white, paint your figure white and allow to dry. Pick the colors of paint you wish to use.
Using a pencil, lightly sketch a design on your figure. If prefer, the design can be added freehand.
Paint your figure.
After the paint has dried, cover the entire figure with a glossy sealer.
